The Wedding Show is the 13th episode of Season 7 of Married... with Children, also the 144th overall episode of the series. Directed by Gerry Cohen and written by Arthur Silver, the episode originally on FOX, premiering on January 10, 1993.

Synopsis[]

While preparing to go to a family wedding, Bud has sex with the bride (Joey Lauren Adams) — whose groom is a big, angry man (Cousin Jimmy, who will appear in episode 25 of this season); Kelly spends time with the bridesmaids; and Al impatiently waits for Peg to find the perfect wedding attire.

Episode summary[]

The episode in which Bud's virginity is finally guaranteed as a thing of the past, "The Wedding Show" guest stars Joey Lauren Adams, probably best-known as the centerpiece of Kevin Smith's 1995 film "Chasing Amy".

Storyline[]

Cousin Jimmy's nuptials are about to commence, and the Bundys are all going to be in attendance. Al's day, however, gets off to a far better than usual start, with a detailed dream about Peg's place being taken by a blonde bombshell, a role-reversal which rights itself as he grabs her. After the necessary cleaning and dressing rituals for Al, during which Marcy and Jefferson come over to repossess the wedding gift, which is Marcy's cuckoo clock, from the kids downstairs, it's Peg's turn, which takes rather longer. Back downstairs, Bud is looking for chat-up advice from Kelly, and, to his shock, it works on the first girl he tries it with. She's looking for the bridesmaids, but disappears upstairs with him, when he remembers to come back for her.

Coordinated bridesmaids

Kelly, meanwhile has coordinated the bridesmaids' outfits - they are all in tight black leather. They soon realize, however, that Janey's missing, which does matter since she is the bride. When she reappears, completely relaxed, and Bud drifts downstairs wearing a dressing-gown and smoking a pipe, Hugh Heffner-style, we are left in no doubt what has happened. Kelly brings him crashing down to earth with the news that his new squeeze is Cousin Jimmy's bride-to-be.

Upstairs Peg has almost finished getting ready when, for once, Al kisses her when she asks him to, forcing her to start over with her make-up. Bud, meanwhile, is exploring his own sexuality when Janey makes an unexpected return in her bridal gown, and explains she was looking for someone she wasn't remotely attracted to "and you were perfect." However, as Jimmy is a psychopathic ex-con, they agree it was a one-time thing.

The wedding, it would seem, is off

Al, in bed, has got back to his dream, with added extras, but Peg's finally ready and shatters the fantasy - again. Al slides into his shirt and jacket, almost admits he loves Peg, and they make it out into the hall, where they bump into Bud and Janey, going for an encore. Al decides this gives them some time, and Peg takes advantage to go and change - again.

Quotes[]

  • [Kelly realizes that Janine just had sex with Bud after coming down the stair in a relaxed state]
  • Kelly: [furious] BUD!
  • [Bud, wearing a smoking jacket, walks down the staircase with swagger and confidence, while carrying a smoking pipe. He stops for a moment as he coughs, before regaining his composure and takes a seat at the couch]
  • Kelly: WHAT DID YOU DO?!
  • Bud: A gentleman never tells. [pauses, then becomes giddy] ...I had SEX! With a girl! And I did it good!
  • Kelly: [disgusted] Oh my God...
  • Bud: That's what she said... twice.
  • Kelly: What, once when you got undressed and once when you put on your bunny slippers?
  • Bud: Save your barbs for someone who's not getting any... like Mom!
  • [Bud sits back, putting his hands behind his head and smiling with pride]
  • Bud: I feel good. Yep, I do. Talk all you want, nothing can bring me down.
  • Kelly: [smugly] You just had sex with your Cousin Jimmy's bride.
  • Bud: [his smile immediately fades away] ...Well, that did it!

  • Peg: Oh, come on. Your life would be hell without me and you know it. You couldn't find anyone better than me. Come on, admit it. I'm your perfect mate, admit it!
  • Al: [embarrassed] ...No.
  • Peg: Alright then, why don't you give me a picture of what your ideal mate would be.
  • Al: Fine. A magnificent young girl, with a beautiful face, slim thighs, and a firm apple of a hiney, and a set of delicious scrumptious hooters.
  • [They both smile and look at each other]
  • Peg: [giddy] Oh, Al, it's me! [starts to playful paw at Al's hands, before he unenthusiastically joins in. She then begins to head to the hallway] Oh honey, you would marry me again.
  • Al: [shrugs] No!

Notes[]

  • The title of this episode is a reference to the attempted wedding of Cousin Jimmy and Janey taking place in this episode.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third time that Joey Lauren Adams has appeared on MWC as a different character. She previously played Mona Mullins in "Top of the Heap" (as well as the TOTH spin-off, Vinnie & Bobby) and as Peggy's relative, Cousin Effie, in "Buck Has a Belly Ache"
  • This episode originally aired the day after Joey Lauren Adams' 25th birthday.
  • Robin Killian, who plays Natalie, Al's dream girl previously appeared on MWC in "The Chicago Wine Party" as Beer Girl #2 in the video about the history of beer.
  • There is some debate as to whether Bud lost his virginity in this episode to Janie or if it actually happened earlier with Crystal from the season 5 episode "Kids! Wadaya Gonna Do?. Regardless, Bud appears to no longer be a virgin from this point on.
  • Al mentions that his best features are his "baby blue eyes" and his butt.
  • This was both the last episode to be filmed in 1992 and the first to air in 1993.

Cultural References[]

  • Jefferson tells the kids and Marcy that he has to stay up and watch "Dionne Warwick and her damn Psychic Friends Network a thousand times because of that clock!"
  • Jefferson says that he tried to throw Marcy's collection of Elvis Presley plates along with her clock and whips.
    • Marcy previously mentioned in her infatuation with the singer and actor in the season 3 episode "I'm Going to Sweatland"
  • When trying to see if he has any good pick up lines, Kelly suggest that he tells the women that his the Keebler Elf and offer them cookies, before saying "If you got the time, I got the hollow tree", referring to the Keebler Company which specialize in making cookies and sweet treats and its mascot, the Keebler Elves, lead by Ernest J. "Ernie" Keebler, who work inside a hollowed out tree.
    • It is referenced again when Janie says that Bud resembles the Keebler Elf.
  • While looking in the mirror, Peggy boasts that she is one of those women who doesn't need a lot of make up. Al then quips, "Oh please, only Tammy Faye, Zsa Zsa and Bozo use more" in reference to:
    • Tammy Faye Messner (more commonly known at the time this episode originally aired as Tammy Faye Bakker) - American Christian singer, evangelist, author, talk show hostess, and television personality.
    • Zsa Zsa Gabor - Hungarian-American actress and socialite.
    • Bozo the Clown - Television clown character.
  • While admiring himself in the mirror, Al mentions his best features are his "baby blue eyes...like Sinatra, Newman, the sea". This is in reference to singer Frank Sinatra (who sang the MWC opening "Love and Marriage") and actor Paul Newman.

Goofs[]

  • When the camera shows The D'Arcys and Bud and Kelly overhearing Al and Peggy's conversation about his necktie, the bird in Marcy's stolen clock is inside. The camera then shows Al and Peggy talking in their room. It then cuts back to the living room and the bird is now out. After Marcy gives her speech about being feminine before threatening to hook punch Jefferson in the liver, the bird has disappeared again. Finally, after Jefferson admits that its too heavy for him to carry and Marcy tells him to hold the door for her, the bird is out once more.
  • Early in the episode, Peggy refers to Jimmy as Al's cousin. However, Kelly states that Bud had sex with his cousin Jimmy's bride early in act two. This would make Jimmy Al and Peggy's nephew as noted later in the season as the two are addressed as aunt and uncle by Jimmy himself.
