The Bundys try to celebrate Seven's birthday in the park, but must face off against a snooty rich family who rented the park to have a birthday party for their son.

Short Summary[]

When Peggy discovers that no one knows Seven's birthday, she picks one at random, Al's. He is understandably not pleased when he has lost his birthday to the new kid. Peggy decides to have a small party for Seven's 6th birthday at a local park, but the party fizzles when a snobbish rich parent arrives brandishing a permit, and declares the park closed to the public for his own son's party. They retaliate by beating up the rich parent and his family, as the Bundy family now accepts Seven as a true Bundy.

Quotes[]

  • Al: Alright, Goldfinger... Let's Rock!
  • [Al and Philip take a fighting stance, but are interrupted by Philip's wife and their kids, who stand in-between the men, with a smug look on their faces]
  • Gwen: Don't get Philip mad! He's a fifth degree master in kung fu!
  • Peg: Oh yeah, well don't get Al mad! He's a fifth grade spelling bee winner!

  • [Al, Bud, and Kelly are upset at seeing the special treatment that Peggy is giving to Seven, despite being an adopted child who never had to deal with the problems of being a naturally born Bundy]
  • Kelly: All I'm saying is that I can't believe he's getting all of mom's love. He's not even a real Bundy!
  • Bud: He's no kind of Bundy. "Bundy" is a name you earn. Our emotional scars run so deep you can almost see them.
  • Al: Yep, it's a point of pride. Ever since the day the first Bundy stepped off the Mayflower... halfway over. They never found him, but they recorded his final words: "Methinks we're here!" Pioneers like that - and ourselves - we're the real Bundys. Why, that kid never suffered any real rejection. Not until he's heard, "the service entrance is in back!"
  • Bud: Or, "not even for fifty bucks."
  • Kelly: Yeah, or, "don't ruin it by talking."
  • Al: Right! Right... [turns and gives Kelly an odd look before resuming his talk] And until that time, he's just another human being with a future! Never be a real Bundy!

  • [Al breaks through the barrier that Philip had set up to keep the Bundys away from the birthday party and takes Seven by the hand to the party]
  • Al: Anyway, [points to Seven] the kid here wants a crack at your piñata...
  • Philip: Ah, no, no! Wait a minute! Hold on!
  • Al: [ walks with Seven to the grill] And I want one of them burgers... And I reclaim this park for the people... [starts touching the food on the grill] And I reclaim this, uh, hot dog for the people, [picks up a grill fork with a steak on it] and this steak, for the people!
  • Philip: That's mine! That's it! [takes a fighting stance] Eat hot Gucci, pal! EE-YA! [tries to kick Al in the midsection, but Al catches his leg and holds it up while putting the steak down]
  • Al: [smiling, in a mocking tone] Tee-hee! You know, buddy, it seems your foot is stuck!
  • Philip: [panicking, with a nervous chuckle] I'll give you a hundred bucks if you let me go!
  • Peg: Take it, Al! Take it!
  • Al: [smiling, in a bitter tone] Nah! Nobody gave me a birthday present, so I guess I'll give myself one... "Happy Birthday, Al!" [punches Philip across his face, knocking him down and then turns to Peg and the kids] Come on, kids! Let's kick some rich butt!

Notes[]

Title[]

  • The title of the episode is a reference to the Bundys choosing a birthday for Seven.

Trivia[]

  • Bud reveals that his birthday is January 22
  • Kelly reveals that her birthday is November 27
  • Frank Lloyd, the show's resident stuntman who previously played Al's friend, Norris in the earlier seasons, plays the Frank the parachuter who breaks his leg upon landing.
  • Peggy's birthday is revealed to be in April.
  • It is revealed that Jefferson does a striptease dance for Marcy's mother.
  • When Al tells Philip that he pays taxes that makes the park open to the public, Peggy points out that he hasn't paid taxes in years. This was also mentioned in several previous episodes, such as "976-SHOE".
  • Peggy reveals that she usually spends her birthday at a strip club called Club Poof eating eggs off of the male dancers' chests.

Cultural References[]

  • As Al gets ready to fight Philip, he tells him "Alright, Goldfinger. Let's rock!". This is in reference to the fictional villain, Auric Goldfinger from the James Bond film, Goldfinger who is wealthy and fascinated with gold.
  • Kelly points out that the rich family were able to hire the Blue Angles to do some skywriting. The Blue Angels are a real flight demonstration squadron of the U.S. Navy that performs for the public throughout the year.
  • After lamenting about Peggy treating Seven better than the rest of the family, Kelly says that they are "'The Titos of the Jackson family". This in reference to Tito Jackson, a musician and original member of The Jackson 5. His name was commonly associated as a joke for being someone who was unwanted or the least successful at something, especially when compared to his brother Michael Jackson and other siblings.

Goofs[]

  • Kelly's birthday is November 27, but in the season 4 episode "Peggy Turns 300", Kelly said her birthday was in February. Prior to that, in the season 3 episode "Life's a Beach" her birthday was sometime in May. It is also stated that Kelly's birthday is in April as stated in the season 7 episode "Movie Show."
  • Al's birthday seem to take place at different times, such as one episode saying it was 2 months after Peg's. As her birthday in April, that would imply that his would be in June. But in another episode, his I.D. says that his birthday is November 7. This episode takes place in September. In season 8 "Honey I Blew up Myself" Al has a birthday the airdate is January but the season(weather) it take place in is unknown. Then there is the curious case of the season 11 episode "Crimes Against Obesity" which was apparently filmed in the fall and aired December 29, 1996. Clearly there was no snow and cold during that episode.
  • The same problem seems to befall Peggy's birthday as "Peggy Turns 300" states that her birthday is in April which is in line with actress Katey Sagal's birthday month. Yet, the season 5 episode, "You Better Shop Around (Part 1)" implies that her birthday is in summer, although it originally aired in April and the season 10 episode "Reverend Al" implies that the birthday is in October which is the original airdate for that episode.
  • Kelly points out that Philip rented the Blue Angels to skywrite a message for Brian. As the Blue Angels are part of the U.S. military, they would not be allowed to be rented out for a small private birthday at a local park. Additionally, the Blue Angels typical showcase aerial techniques and maneuvers in fighter aircrafts that would not be well suited for skywriting in the first place.
  • Bud reads out the message written by the Blue Angels in real time. In actuality, skywriting is a slow task, as it can typical produce one to two characters per minute and only a limited amount of characters for a message. For such a long and elaborate message like Philip had the Blue Angels write would have required a significant amount of airplanes.
